Open letter to the Conscious Leaders

Dear Conscious Leaders,

Last week I read a letter that you signed and sent to our Prime Minister, asking that the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) be used to consolidate and future proof the UK’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some names and organisations I recognised, others I didn’t.

But I did notice that while some of the organisations already have sustainability and purpose coursing through their veins — and both are clearly obvious to the outside world — others feel less obvious.

This letter is to people in those organisations who people may not have expected to see. The ones who may raise a suspicious eyebrow in others as they did in me when I saw them on the list of signatories.

The ones who left the question ‘is this really important to them or just another CSR tick box exercise?’ hovering over my lips.

First I’d like to say, on behalf of me and my children, thank you for putting your name to that letter. In doing so you have chosen to step up.

I am curious to know how you and your organisations could answer the following questions:

  1. Which of the SDGs is your organisation most aligned with?

  2. When you look at your company’s website and other communications, do you think the things you’re doing to support the SDGs come through strongly enough? Or is this something you struggle with or choose not to do?

  3. Are you transparently reporting on your performance of which SDGs you’re contributing to and aware and reporting on any that you are negatively impacting?

  4. How much do you think not outwardly showing your support for a UK recovery in line with the SDGs could cost you, your organisation and ultimately the UK?

  5. How are you going to show to the world that you believe, stand by and are taking action on everything that was written in that letter you signed? Even the uncomfortable stuff?

  6. What needs to change within your organisation in order to build a better future where everyone in this country has a good life on a healthy planet?

I am so grateful you have used your platform to nudge the Prime Minister towards a clear and green recovery.

Words are powerful, but actions always speak louder. So if you are struggling to answer any of the above questions I’d love to hear more about that.

Warmest Wishes,
Rachel Savage
